Orfice Reducers are NOT Created Equal

For those of you who do not know what an orfice reducer is, it's the little plastic piece on the top of your essential oil bottle that keeps the oils from coming out like a freight train (See picture above). It is designed to limit the amount of essential oil that comes out at one time, to easily, controlled, drops. Depending on the essential oil you are using, they could still come out very quickly, this reducer definitely helps.
I have seen claims that certain essential oils companies are using larger orfice reducers to increase your usage of their oils. The more you use, the more you buy. For anyone that knows me, I knew I HAD to do some research on this, I just couldn't believe it.
SHIVER ME TIMBERS! It's true. After studying, and making blends with bottles from a number of different brands, it is glaringly clear the reducers are not the same. Both of the most popular essential oil companies are using orfice reducers that are twice as big as the ones we sell here at Sweet Willow Spirit Aromatherapy. What a disappointment. It isn't limited to the MLM companies either. One of the bottles in our picture is from a popular web based essential oil company.

What This Means to You
When using some of these brands, a drop isn't necessarily 'just' a drop. As you can see by the above picture, the bottle in the upper left hand corner is twice as big as the rest. This is a popular MLM essential oil company. The one next to it is another popular MLM oil company, this one is still quite large. The bottle in the lower left corer, which is a popular web based oil company is about the same size as the one in the upper right corner. The bottle in the lower right corner is one of our bottles.
When using an essential oils from one of these other companies, you are not getting what you think you are getting in terms of drops when making a blend. The largest reducer is twice as big as some on the market, that means your drop is twice as big. In essence, each drop is double, instead of counting that one drop as one, you need to count it as 2!
Wasteful
Not only is this way of doing business unethical, it is quite wasteful and very dangerous. You are wasting mother earth's precious resources and making blends that are double the power you think they are! Making a blend for a child, elderly person or someone with a skin sensitivity is much more difficult with some of these bottles. How could your recipe possibly be accurate?
Options
If you find you have large orfice reducers and want to use the essential oils you have on hand, remove the reducer and use a disposable pipette or scale. Scales are an excellent alternative since some oils are thicker than others, making their drops larger than those that are thinner. The problem with a scale is, one that will register a drop or 2 of an essential oils is going to be expensive making it cost prohibitive to the home user.
In the end, it all comes down to what makes you feel comfortable using. Now that you are aware of these differences, you can choose what works best for you. Should you have any questions, shoot me an email at melissa@sweetwillowspirit.com.
Love and light!
