You know the old adage, anything too good to be true generally is? Well that adage is not lost here. As a professional aromatherapist, and in the aromatherapy community we have been seeing an uptick in recommendations of applying essential oils to the belly button.... WHY?
Can we just stop for a moment and check our common sense? There is absolutely no reason to add essential oils to your naval, honest. If you are a follower of Ayurvedic tradition, they will add different carrier oils to the naval area, however, this is not the same. "In Ayurvedic tradition, the navel (nabhi) represents the origin of life. It links mother and child before birth and provides a hub for nutrients to flow between their bodies." To learn more about this, visit, Why Naval Therapy is Luxurious...... No where in their information are they adding essential oils.
After studying with David Crow and learning about Ayurvedic use of essential oils in healing, the memes that are out there suggesting adding essential oils to this ancient tradition are so absurd. One must first ask themselves, WHY? Why am I adding essential oils to my naval in the first place? Are the Dosha's unbalanced, are there elements that are unbalanced as well? There is a time and place to add oil, not essential oil to this area.
The umbilicus, according to my medical sciences education and the complete anatomy software we use in school, the umbilicus, which is where the umbilical cord was attached from our mothers to us where we received nourishment turns into a fibrous band or ligament after birth. It no longer transports blood or anything to the rest of the body.

The memes were created to lure the public into a new fad, which by using more of these precious oils you buy more. If you follow any educated aromatherapist, they are not recommending essential oils in the naval, why not? Perhaps, because we would be laughed off social media by our peers. Many of these memes are unsafe, using undiluted essential oils that are skin irritating. If you aren't already aware, sensitization is happening at a rapid pace right now due to all the misinformation regarding neat application.
If you want to seek out Ayurveda and have a traditional session, please find a skilled practitioner. I hear it's amazing and very relaxing. They will help you balance your body and you will be able to use this modality as a form of health and healing rather than using essential oils "just because" or to sub-come to this fad.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at melissa@sweetwillowspirit.com. Also, if you see a true and apparent medical need to use essential oils in the way, please let me know. I am always open to receiving new information. You don't know what you don't know, until you know it! Have a wonderful and blessed day!
Love and light,
Melissa
