Basil is a hardy annual, grows 1 to 3 feet tall and native to tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. I feel this oil is underutilized and needs more of a presence in the world. It has an herbal, spicy and sweet scent reminding me of black licorice. Basil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowers of the plant and considered a top note for blending.

According to Tisserand and Young’s book, Essential Oil Safety A Guide for Health Care Professionals: Second Edition, essential oils high in methyl cavicol (estragole) should be used with extreme caution when taken internally. Because of the anti-platelet aggregation activity, oral use is cautioned in conjunction with anticoagulant drugs, major surgery, childbirth, peptic ulcer, and hemophilia or other bleeding disorders. Avoid use during pregnancy. *1
