Summer is here! Which means many fabulous and wonderful things. The outdoors are alive with beautiful flowers, chirping birds and green grass. The short cold days have turned into longer, warm day and hopefully the sun is shining! It's amazing.... unless you are like my family and I. We suffer from seasonal allergies.

Trees, pollen, grass, weeds, and mold are among the most common triggers of seasonal allergies. They release tiny particles into the air to fertilize other plants. When they come in contact with noses of those who are allergic, it can send the body's defenses haywire. The immune system sees the pollen as a danger and releases antibodies to attack the allergens. Chemicals called histamines are then released into the blood. Histamines can cause issues such as runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, and other symptoms. It isn't just the pollen in your neighborhood that can cause issues, it can travel for miles.

Antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergen properties found in some essential oils can help reduce these symptoms so you can enjoy every season!

The last 3-4 years it seems my allergies have gotten worse each year. Now, my children have been affected by them. When I became an aromatherapist, one of the first things I made for myself was a roller bottle with an allergy blend. By using this blend, I have not had to use my prescription advair, nasonex, rescue inhaler or zyrtec in almost 1.5 years. I was diagnosed with asthma and seasonal allergies in my early 20's. I have tried oh so many prescription drugs to help with the symptoms. Every one of them had side affects, ranging from bloody noses, dry mouth, dental problems, to heart issues or worse. They weren't actually helping me, they were just masking the problem while causing other issues in the process. Plus, my copay for just 2 of the medications was $120 a month. OUCH!

Some essential oils that may help with seasonal threats include:

  • Lavender (Lavndula angustifolia) - contains natural antihistamine properties

  • Basil (Ocimum basilicum) - reduces inflammation response to allergens

  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) - support respiratory system & clear the head

  • Roman chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) - reduce inflammation, support for skin allergies

  • Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) - support the terrain and facilitate healing

  • Lemon (Citrus limon) - cleansing - helps reduce pollen and allergens while working with lymph system

  • Black Spruce (Picea mariana) - support respiratory system and immune system

  • Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) - support respiratory system & clear the head

  • Laurel Leaf (Laurus nobilis) - support the respiratory system & clear the head

  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) - cleanses, clears airways and fights most threats

  • My Allergy Support Blend - properly diluted and ready to be used immediately

If you decide you would like to try your hand at making your own blend, please research each essential oil completely. Some oils have contraindications or drug interactions that should be taken into consideration as well as age restrictions.

Like I said, I haven't had to use any of the prescription or over the counter medications listed above since starting to use my essential oil blend. It worked so well for us, I started to offer it to others. If you are interested in learning more about my allergy blend, visit my website at https://www.sweetwillowspirit.com/essential-oils. There are 2 strengths, adult and children. If you suffer from asthma, please choose the child version. The adult blend contains eucalyptus which may bring on an attack in an asthmatic person.

I am now working on the gut and digestion of my family. Hoping to totally uproot the allergy issue completely. Should you want to book a health consultation, please send an email to melissa@sweetwillowspirit.com. I would be more than happy to work with you.

Love and light,

Melissa
