Essential Oil Coach™ vs. Certified Aromatherapist

The aromatherapy and essential oil industry is BIG business. It's booming! Since there are no industry regulations (yet), pretty much anything goes. That shouldn't matter. We can still be educated, employ safe practices and do our own research.

The Essential Oil Coach™ is something that has popped up in the last year. This is a trademarked title coming from The Essential Oil Institute. This school teaches undiluted and improper use even after Robert Tisserand, an expert and world leader in aromatherapy has suggested the opposite.

In listening to the sales webinar, it starts out by stating, "there are 5 eos that should be used on a daily basis. You will become an Essential Oil Expert and grow your business to be a leader in essential oils". I am not sure about you, but I feel like NO ONE is an expert after taking a class for a few weeks or even months. You need years of training, education and practice in something to even understand what you are doing. The only person I consider an expert in this industry is Robert Tisserand. He has been working with and using essential oils for over 40 years. To me, that is expert level.

Remember essential oils are comparable to medications in that the chemical constituents in the eos are similar to the potency of medication. Many synthetic medications are using the same chemical structure of an essential oil, but obviously created synthetically. Both are extremely powerful.

You truly do not need to use essential oils daily if you are not taking a medication. It is over loading your system, your body. Everything you add to the body, your organs need to remove. We are seeing more and more liver and kidney issues than ever before. Liver cysts, raised liver enzymes, improper liver function and so much more. It has doctors baffled. As an aromatherapist, I'm not. I see the bad recommendations every day.

Let's look at some differences between the Coach and the Aromatherapist below.

This information was taken directly from the Essential Oil Institutes website (August 2017). I have been sitting on this blog post for THAT long. I just don't know what to do with this information. Since I wrote this blog a year ago, registration has not been open for quite some time. It wasn't open at the time of posting either.

As you can see, an EO Coach and aromatherapist are totally different. An EO coach does not receive formal training on how the essential oils work in the body, how to avoid contraindications or drug interactions, safe product use, blend formulation, or really anything but sales and how to build your business. It really isn't much different than what sales training provides.

I would also like to add that The Essential Oil Institute is an approved school by the AADP (The American Association of Drugless Practitioners). This story on the Seattle Times website talks about how this association is a paper mill. "Becoming a member of the association (The American Association of Drugless Practitioners) is as easy as faxing in a brief application with a photocopy of a driver’s license and $260. In return, applicants are issued certificates that declare them a Board-Certified Holistic Health Practitioner. For schools wanting accreditation from this association, the process is just as simple. They are required only to mail a copy of their curriculum, and a fee. No one visits the school or interviews owners, instructors or students, he said." This title is not as prestigious as it seems. Pretty much ANYONE can get it."

Here is a comparison of someone in essential oils sales and a trained aromatherapist. Many aromatherapists have been clinically trained and educated. Meaning, they have double the education of an aromatherapist.

An aromatherapist goes through extensive classes on anatomy, physiology and chemistry. We need to understand how the body works and what the addition of an essential oil in the body is going to do. We work with real people and their issues to make blends for them and see how whatever we choose works. We are then critiqued on our choices and how the client feels it worked. We are trying to help this person get better. Healing is primary, sales is secondary.

If you want to heal yourself, your family and clients, then take the time to learn properly. There is so much misinformation, too many are getting hurt. Please be careful and educate yourself. I only want the best for you and you to understand that the Essential Oil Coach is not an aromatherapist.

I believe in the education of essential oils, selling them is an added benefit of that education. Improper use can harm. All-natural products still come with risk when improperly used. Come join the group Unspoken Truth About Essential Oils on Facebook. You can see firsthand what bad advice can do. Many of the people in that group are sensitized. According to wikipedia, "Sensitization is a non-associative learning process in which repeated administration of a stimulus results in the progressive amplification of a response. Sensitization often is characterized by an enhancement of response to a whole class of stimuli in addition to the one that is repeated."

Basically, sensitization regarding essential oils is when the immune system responds to the threat, which is the essential oil(s). It is generally out of proportion to the amount of eos used. So 1 drop of eos if you are sensitized can cause a reaction in the entire body. Sometimes producing a rash resembling that of poison ivy. I have seen where it is just the face, or just the hands, but also more than 1/2 the body. When this happens, you may never by able to use essential oils ever again. It's quite possible you won't be able to use herbs either. Many who are sensitized to essential oils in the group I mentioned above can't even use anything with a fragrance, synthetic or otherwise. This is very serious business. I don't want this happening to you!

Many wellness advocates, sales people and coaches advice use internally. Very rarely do I ingest them. I think I have once in 4 years. There is no need! Herbs are much a safer, gentler and easier option. Why set off a nuclear bomb when you only need a grenade? In many cases, a better option is available. A true aromatherapist knows when that is!

I am not sure about you but my health is VERY important to me. I am not going to trust it to just anyone. Ever. Take the time to do your research. If you have questions, ask. Research the essential oils but also research the person you are taking advice from. Read my blog Be Careful What and Who You Believe. There is way too much bad advice out there, protect yourself and those you love.
