Fresh, woody with an evergreen scent, cypress is steam distilled from the needles and twigs of the conifer tree or shrub. It is considered a middle-base note.

According to wikipedia.com, "Cupressus sempervirens, the Mediterranean cypress (also known as Italian cypress, Tuscan cypress, Persian cypress, or pencil pine), is a species of cypress native to the eastern Mediterranean region, in northeast Libya, southern Albania, southern coastal Croatia (Dalmatia), southern Montenegro, southern Greece, southern Turkey, Cyprus, northern Egypt, western Syria, Lebanon, Malta, the Palestine region, Italy, western Jordan, and also a disjunct population in Iran."

"In times of old, cypress was used in distilleries as staves. Before stainless steel was invented, it held mash ferments to make alcohol." (wikipedia)

"In cosmetics it is used as astringent, firming, anti-seborrheic, anti-dandruff, anti-aging and as fragrance." (wikipedia) Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition that causes red skin with scaly patches, usually on the scalp.

Cypress is a very aromatic oil that may have a calming and soothing effect on stressed, and irritable people. According to pubmed.com, in a study dated, June 2, 2014, Chemical composition, antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity of the essential oil and methanol extract of the Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.) "Cupressus sempervirens is a medicinal plant traditional, its dried leaves are used in treatment of stomach pain, diabetes, inflammation, toothache, laryngitis and as contraceptive. The results presented here may suggest that the Eo and extracts of C. sempervirens possess antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties, and therefore, can be used as natural preservative ingredients in food and/or pharmaceuticals."

Published in 2015 in the Journal of Chemistry, the study, Chemical Composition, Antioxidant Potential, and Antibacterial Activity of Essential Oil Cones of Tunisian Cupressus sempervirens showed that "Cupressus sempervirens essential oil is used externally for headache, colds, cough, and bronchitis."

In an article published on December 30, 2014, on issuu.com, titled, Aromatherapy for the menopause - National Women's Health, cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) may be useful for fluid retention, hot flashes, sweating and irritability.
