Sodalite can be somewhat similar to lazurite and lapis lazuli, but sodalite rarely contains pyrite (a common inclusion in lapis). Its color is mainly traditional royal blue, or blue-grey with white Calcite mixed within the stones. It is also differentiated further from similar minerals by the white (rather than blue) a tell-tale sign, streak.

It is sometimes referred to as "poor man's lapis" due to its similar color and the fact that is much less expensive. Its name comes from its high sodium content. Most sodalite will fluoresce orange under ultraviolet light. *1

Sodalite is a stone of logic, rationality, and efficiency. It is helpful for work in groups and stimulates thought. Sodalite is a stone that is good for healing breaches in communication. It is a stone of truth, and brings this to all communications. It can help end arguments or other disagreements. It is particularly useful for honesty of emotions. It increases intelligence, knowledge and learning, and can unite the logical with the spiritual. Physically it is beneficial for the glands, digestive system, relieving insomnia, regulating blood pressure, healing burns, regulating metabolism, diabetes, fevers, sinus issues and calcium deficiency. It can also be useful for quicker healing of head colds. It may be emotionally beneficial to aid in the use of autism, sensory issues, EMF protection, fear, intuition, stopping mind chatter, panic attacks, sadness, trust, ADHD, emotional balance, meditation, mental focus/clarity, and phobias.

Sodalite is associated with the throat and 3rd eye chakras. The Third Eye Chakra is located just above the eyebrows in the forehead. While this chakra is generally associated with the pineal gland, it needs to interact with the pituitary gland to activate it. It is said that the pineal gland and the pituitary gland work together to activate the energy of this chakra. Using sodalite with this chakra may open the window of your higher self and aid the development of psychic abilities such as clairvoyance, as well as clairaudience, psychic knowing and intuition. If this chakra is overactive, you may feel spaced out, lost, worry, and bee seen as living in a fantasy world. Underactive chakra may be that you cannot see the big picture, are easily influenced, confused about purpose, and doubt yourself. A balanced chakra would mean you are intuitive, charismatic, wise, and understand your purpose.

The throat chakra or 5th chakra is located in the center of the neck, just above above the collarbones. This chakra is generally associated with the thyroid gland, larynx, trachea, ears, nose, teeth, mouth, and throat. By ensuring your throat chakra is healthy and balanced, you assist truthful and honest expression of your ideas. This area of the body where your communication abilities emerge, and is associated with hearing, including psychic hearing. An overactive throat chakra can be related to speaking too much, boring others, criticizing, and being stubborn. An underactive throat charkra may bring difficulty expressing personal truth, being afraid to speak in public, and being timid.

Sodalite is associated with the water element and the astrological sign Sagittarius.
