Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a rhizome (root) oil, the is steam distilled, with a top-middle note that has a lemony, spicy, woody with a slight balsamic scent. It is considered to have an external secretory structure. Meaning, in order to smell it, you have to cut it open.
According to wikipedia.com "It is a herbaceous perennial which grows annual pseudostems (false stems made of the rolled bases of leaves) about a meter tall bearing narrow leaf blades. The inflorescences bear pale yellow with purple flowers and arise directly from the rhizome on separate shoots. Ginger is in the family Zingiberaceae, to which also belong turmeric (Curcuma longa), cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), and galangal."
According to pubmed.com, in a study dated, March 31, 2016, The Effectiveness of Ginger in the Prevention of Nausea and Vomiting during Pregnancy and Chemotherapy "The best available evidence demonstrates that ginger is an effective and inexpensive treatment for nausea and vomiting and is safe."
An article from University of Maryland Medical Center, titled Ginger, states "(Ginger) It has been used to help treat the common cold, flu-like symptoms, headaches, and painful menstrual periods. Ginger has also been used to help treat arthritis, colic, diarrhea, and heart conditions. Preliminary studies suggest that ginger may lower cholesterol and help prevent blood from clotting. That can help treat heart disease where blood vessels can become blocked and lead to heart attack or stroke. Other studies suggest that ginger may help improve blood sugar control among people with type 2 diabetes. More research is needed to determine whether ginger is safe or effective for heart disease and diabetes."
In an article published on June 4, 2016, on the site pubmed.com, titled, Anti-Inflammatory Effects of the Essential Oils of Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) in Experimental Rheumatoid Arthritis, "The joint protective effects of essential oils derived from ginger, which modestly (38%) inhibited chronic joint inflammation."
