Top 23 Homeopathic Flu Remedies

As many of you know, I am studying homeopathy. It has been an AMAZING journey. As we are coming into what many call "flu season", I wanted to share my top remedies to have on hand.

Aconitum Napellus A state of fear, anxiety; anguish of mind and body. Mental and physical restlessness. Sudden and great sinking of strength. Complaints and tension caused by exposure to dry, cold weather. Eyes feel dry and hot, as if sand is in them. Pain at root (base) of nose. Tingling in cheeks and numbness. Gums hot and inflamed. Acute sudden fever. Tongue coated white. Vomiting, with fear, heat, profuse sweat and increased urination. Bitter taste of everything except water. Intense thirst. Cough, dry, short, hacking; worse at night and after midnight. Tingling in chest after cough. Fears future. Anxious dreams.

Allium Cepa Watery and acrid nasal discharge which becomes worse in warm room. Oppressed breathing. Tickling in larynx. Eyes sensitive to light. Burning in nose, mouth, throat, bladder and skin. Sneezing, especially when entering a warm room.

Antimonium Tartaricum Respiratory problems, great accumulation of mucus, rattling of mucus but little expectoration or difficult to cough up. Thirst for cold water but little and often. Great drowsiness. Numbness, perspiration, wheezing. Vomiting with intense nausea, cold sweat and sleepiness. Worse in evening, at night when lying down, from warmth; in damp cold weather, from all sour things and milk. Better when sitting upright and expectoration.

Arsenicum Album Influenza with thin, watery and burning nasal discharge that may be irritating to nose and upper lip. Sneezing. Photophobia. Restlessness. Intolerance of smell of food. Food Poisoning. Red eyes and nose.

Baptisia Rapid onset. Sinks rapidly into stupid state. Dull red face – patient looks drugged and out of it. High temperature with red face. Drops asleep while answering questions. Gastric flu - sudden attacks of violent diarrhea and vomiting. Great prostration.

Belladonna Sudden and violent complaints and inflammations. Neuralgic pains (headaches) which come and go suddenly. No thirst. Redness of affected organs. Skin sore and sensitive. Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), menses profuse. Eyelids red and swollen. Nose bleeds. Spasmodic hiccough.

Bryonia Alba Excessive irritability. Dryness of all mucous membranes. Great thirst for large quantities of water. Constipation. Dry cough. Joints red and swollen. All complaints are aggravated by motion.

Causticum Dryness, rawness, hoarseness, cannot speak, cough hard, and racks the whole chest. Chest feels full of mucus, cannot cough deep enough to reach the mucus. Cough with involuntary emissions of urine. Coughing relieved by cold drinks. Feel things deeply, even the suffering of other, sensitive, individuals who take a great interest in the welfare of others.

Chamomilla Excessive irritability and impatience specially in children. Congestion, severe or high fever and violent earache. Diarrhea of children during dentition. Cough dry, at night, when asleep, tickling in throat. Rheumatic pains.

Drosera Rotundifolia

Spasmodic dry, irritating, choking cough (much like whooping-cough) with hoarseness of voice. Nose bleed. Disinclination to speak because talking creates breathing difficulties. Spasmodic, nervous and sympathetic cough, deep sounding, hoarse and barking, with pain in the hypochondrium (upper region of abdomen just above ribs), must hold the part with the hands. Cough with paroxysms (sudden attack) following each other very rapidly, can scarcely breathe, chokes. Harassing and titillating cough in children with commences as soon as the head touches the pillow at night. Worse immediately on lying down, after midnight, warmth, drinking, laughing, singing, weeping.

Dulcamara For flu aggravated by the transition from summer to fall. Infections of the respiratory tract that usually cause dense, yellowish mucus, possibly in eyes too. Stuffed up nose. This is one of the best remedies in the acute form, the eyes are suffused (filled with liquid, possibly yellow discharge), the throat is sore and the cough hurts because of the muscular soreness. Brought on by damp, cold changes in the weather.

Eupatorium Perforatum Intense aching limbs and back – as if bones were broken. Can have soreness of flesh. Bursting headache. Dare not to move because of the pain. The chills begin in the small of the back, with aching in the limbs as though every bone in the body were being broken, high fever with increased aching, follow by scanty or profuse sweat. Hoarseness with aching soreness of trachea. Hoarse, rough cough with scraping in lungs. Cough with soreness, compelling the patient to his chest with hand. Eyeballs sore.

Euphrasia Similar to Allium Cepa but with profuse bland nasal discharge and acrid, scalding tears (opposite with Allium - nose is acrid). Eye remedy - conjunctivitis with violent attacks of profuse secretion stinging eyes, dust or sand in the eyes.

Ferrum Phosphoricum Headache better by cold applications. Eyes red, inflamed, with burning sensation. Face flushed; cheeks sore and hot. Ulcerated sore throat. Tonsils red and swollen. Eustachian tubes inflamed. Congestion of lungs. Expectoration of pure blood in pneumonia. Palpitation; pulse rapid. Restlessness and sleeplessness. Nose bleeds. Aversion to meat and milk. Expectoration of pure blood in pneumonia.

Gelsemium Acute influenza (flu) or sore throats, with weakness, limp limbs, chills, fever, headaches with double vision, and heavy, drooping eyelids. There may be a lack of thirst, even during fever. Slowly developing acute coryza (common cold) days after an exposure to warm moist, relaxing weather. Afternoon fevers without chills in infants and children. Frequent sneezing with fluent excoriating coryza, sore throat, difficulty of swallowing, dry, tickling cough; a feeling of hot water passing through the nostrils; relieved near the fire; general prostration. Muscular weakness. Vertigo.

Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum

Cough when exposed to dry and cold wind. Croupy cough, with loose, rattling phlegm in windpipe. Yellow phlegm dominates. Sinus pressure, rattling & choking cough, worse after midnight. Severe laryngeal catarrh, with roughness and pain in the upper part of throat. Cannot bear to be uncovered, exposure to cold excites cough. Anxious, hoarse, wheezing respiration. Worse from cold, dry weather. Better in warm, moist weather. Suits thin, irritable, impatient, chilly, oversensitive individuals. When nothing else seems to be working.

Influenzinum

Indicated for Flu-like Symptoms. Influenzinum is often used for flu-like symptoms. The remedy is made from the current strains of influenza virus. So this will need to be purchased new every year to ensure you have the correct strain.

Ipecacuanha Nausea and vomiting possibly with hyper-salivation due to any reason as well as the flu. Diarrhea with grass-green stool. Sleep with eyes half open. Suffocating and wheezing cough. Asthma. Bronchitis associated with croup. Hoarseness, especially at end of a cold. Nagging cough that gags.

Lycopodium

Otitis media (ear infection) aggravated on the right side. Sinusitis which is aggravated on the right side. Complete stoppage of nose, breathes with open mouth and protrudes the tongue; frontal sinuses involved. Obstruction is aggravated at night. Snuffles of infants. Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis. Aggravated or starts on right side, ameliorated by warm drinks. Cough is a chronic, dry tickling cough. Bronchitis, pneumonia, aggravated on the right side. Psoriasis. Lack of self-confidence.

Mercurius Solubilus (Merc.) Ear infections either chronic or acute. Nose has chronic coryza (common cold) with offensive, greenish-yellow discharge. Sneezing ameliorated by lying. Cough is aggravated at night, by warmth of bed, lying on right side. Mouth ulcers or canker sores. Salivation aggravated at night in sleep. Offensive breath or metallic taste Throat inflammation, acute or chronic. Pharyngitis, tonsillitis. Swelling of glands. Diarrhea with strong urging. Stool is offensive, greenish, bloody, slimy.

Nux Vomica Initial stage, caused by dry cold weather or by sitting on cold steps or in cold places. Headache in sunshine and on waking in the morning. Right sided complaints. Sneezing, nose stuffed up at night and in open air but fluent in a warm room and during day, with scraping rawness in the throat. Dullness or oppression in the frontal sinuses and watering of the eyes. Great irritability. Stomach problems are aggravated by eating. Sleep which is not refreshing.

Pulsatilla Nigra Mouth is dry but no thirst. Taste of mouth keeps changing. Secretions from eyes, nose and mouth are all thick. Measles. “Ripe cold” in which the discharges are green and bland, not in the least excoriating; bad smell in the nose, as of old catarrh. Secretions from eyes, nose and mouth are all thick. Measles. Moods are changeable and contradictory. Changeable and contradictory symptoms. Stye in the eye.

Veratrum Album Extreme coldness, blueness and weakness. Pale face. Profuse and violent diarrhea. Painful diarrhea followed by great weakness. Cold sweat. Weakness of heart with intermittent action. Cramps in calves. Nausea with projectile vomiting. Have tried Arsenicum Album with no benefit.

My favorite homeopathic company is Washington Homeopathic Products. Their products are approved by the HPUS. The HPUS is the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States. This is a HUGE honor and necessity since homeopathic remedies are supplements which have more of a leeway with regulations than prescription drugs. Supplements are not as scrutinized as pharmaceuticals. As consumers we need to make sure what we are buying is effective and safe.
