Juniper Berry (Juniperus commonis) is a berry oil, that is steam distilled, with a middle note. Juniper has a fresh, sweet, woody and sometimes slightly balsamic scent. Did you know that the berry is also used to make Gin? Yep!
Juniper Berry is high in Alpha-Pinene which comes from the monoterpene family. According to my aromatherapy education at Aromahead Institute, most oils rich in monoterpenes have an antiseptic effect. They can also be helpful decongestants for the respiratory system. Also the may increase circulation while reducing stagnation in the muscular system.
According to Francis and Taylor online, in a study dated January 2017, Anti-inflammatory activity of Juniper (Juniperus communis) berry essential oil in human dermal fibroblasts, "Although juniper (Juniperus communis) berry essential oil (JEO) has been used in skin care products, research on its biological activity in human skin cells is scarce. In the current study, we explored the biological activity of JEO (with alpha-pinene as the major active component) in pre-inflamed human dermal fibroblasts, which were designed to mimic the disease biology of chronic inflammation and fibrosis. This study provides the first evidence of the biological activity of JEO in human dermal fibroblasts."
Researchgate.com published a study dated January 2006, titled, Antimicrobial activity of juniper berry essential oil, which states "The essential oil of juniper berry has diuretic properties, gastrointestinal irritant andantiseptic properties. The diuretic action of juniper is primarily due to its essential oil, which contains terpinen-4-ol. The use of juniper berry has been approved for dyspepsia and, with other plants for bladder and kidney conditions. The berry has digestive, stomachic, and antirheumatic properties.
As you can see, it's great for reducing bacteria, and inflammation but there are so many more benefits.
