How is Your Moral Compass?

So, this just happened. I was just in an argument with a "friend" about morals. Why is it that society ACCEPTS morals as something that can be easily thrown aside if it doesn't suit you? You can be moralistic about one topic and not another. What? How? In my opinion, either you have morals, or, YOU DON'T.

Ernest Hemingway once said, “So far, about morals, I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.” If we must justify our actions to ourselves or someone else, it probably isn't worth doing in the first place.

This isn't like many topics I share. I don't see that there is any gray area. You can't be a moral person regarding one topic and then turn around and do something unethical and morally wrong to further your own interest later. One good deed doesn't negate the bad.

The definition of morals is:

"a person's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do."

I don't believe that morals are separate in personal or business issues either. Someone is running that business, promoting it. There is always a human behind every business. If you have been corrected as to the fact that you are giving out bad advice but refuse to see it, does it mean that you don't care or are looking at your bottom line?

To me, morals, integrity and ethics all go hand in hand. Without any of them, how can someone be a well-rounded individual? I wrote about ethics and integrity before in this blog post. As you can see, these 3 things are very important to me. It seems the human race is getting further and further from doing the right thing.

We as adults need to lead by example. Remember that eyes are ALWAYS on you, even when you think you are alone. Especially if you have children around you. Don't you want to raise them to have good morals? I know I do.

I love this quote, "The Top 15 Things Money Can’t Buy: Time. Happiness. Inner Peace. Integrity. Love. Character. Manners. Health. Respect. Morals. Trust. Patience. Class. Common sense. and Dignity."

― Roy T. Bennett

(source Tim Fargo - Twitter)

“Don't let your special character and values, the secret that you know and no one else does, the truth - don't let that get swallowed up by the great chewing complacency.” ― Aesop

Morals are a NOT a convenience. You don't just "get' them when it suits you. It's like living a healthy lifestyle. You can't exercise every day but eat a ton of processed garbage and believe you are living a healthy life. It's a mindset. A true, total and utter way of life.

Thank you for reading, have a wonderful day. Should you have a question or comment, please send an email to melissa@sweetwillowspirit.com.

Love and light,

Melissa
